I will never do couples therapy again. All it did was cause me to gaslight myself into making excuses and enabling very poor behaviour from my partner, and deny and abandon my own feelings, needs and boundaries. I am NEVER going to do it again

My couples therapist told me this week that I shouldn’t throw the word ‘gaslighting’ around as that is implying that my husband is abusive (the subtext being that she doesn’t think he is abusive and I’m exaggerating). The thing is though that I’ve definitely felt gaslit in our relationship in that I’ve been made to feel crazy because I’m the person that’s upset and I’m ’the problem’

My husband had an explosion in the last session of the last couples therapy we had. He stormed out, and the therapist basically told me to give him space, to let them work it out, to cancel my part of a trip that had been planned for months. So once again, it was up to me to deal with the fallout, to regulate all the emotion, and to sacrifice for his needs. She also asked me to drop out so that she could work one on one with him. He went one more time by himself, and now refuses to ever go to therapy again.

I have been in couples therapy for over a year. One day, my husband logged into the cameras in my car and took a picture of my friend walking me my car, made me call him in the middle of therapy later that day. The therapist let it happen, and then when I said how abusive that felt, neither one said anything. It was as if it was never said at all

I am a man and I can relate with being seen as the problem because I am the one who's upset. I think it might not be a gender thing
