so there's two main families of chords in a given key signature, the tonic, the predominant, and the dominant. there's 2-3 chords in each family where there's the main in the family then the 'lessers'. think of them as a loop, tonic leads to predominant leads to dominant leads to tonic, over and over again. well this song doesn't start the chorus on the main tonic, it starts on another lesser chord in that same family so it's already not what you expect. then it goes to main tonic which is not normal, it's usually main to lesser. then she goes through a cycle of exclusively using the three predominant chords which is very musically disorienting so much so that the tonic of the chord changes. what feels like home at the beginning happens on "melting in the sun" but we've been so disoriented for so long it doesn't feel like home anymore, the old dominant chord is now "home" and we finally reach it for the first time at the end of the chorus!

its because the melody doesn’t end on the root note so the melody never feels finished, it feels like it’s constantly building to something because there’s never true resolution until the very end of the chorus. it’s the same thing she does on vampire and drop dead

Because canon in D is the most accurate musical portrayal of yearning ever written. It leaves a constant chug in the score under the already gut wrenching lyrics. It’s actually fucking terrifying. I can’t lie, I genuinely think this album has so many Easter eggs and is truly all raveled into each other. Taylor swift would never, her metaphors have never gone as deep as the base score

It’s the build up of harmonies and instrumentals! Her vocal line staying at a high, almost drone-like pitch builds excitement and keeps the listener engaged and in anticipation for the excepted cadence. However, instead of culminating to a cardinalThen, when she continues into the lyrics “and my heart keeps…” she is evading the expected resolution by expanding the form with an extended chorus. Essentially she builds anticipation with part-writing and good production.

A lot of people mentioned the chord progression build but it’s also the arrangement. The drums !!! Make the song. The way it starts with the simple guitar riff and comes back to it. The entire thing is genius. Makes you feel like running or dancing.
