This reminds me of a video that I saw late last year when some booktok girlie was like “I liked ACOTAR but why did the author use such pretentious words?” And the words were like tawny and aquamarine. And the thing that killed me was she was holding a kindle, they have built in dictionaries, it would have taken less time to click on the word learn it and move on than to make a video complaining. And I was struck with how deeply incurious she was when met with something she didn’t immediately recognize.

i felt literate graduating public high school, but i don’t think i understood true thoughtful curiosity wrt knowledge until my second year of college. there’s are humbleness and empathy factors that’re often left out of the process, imo, often bc classes are competitive (even if they’re not framed that way (ie: top of class ranks etc)). a collaborative spirit allows literacy and curiosity to coexist in a way that creates a solid foundation for knowledge building.

I'm forever curious and not too proud or confused to not ever look up a word or theory I come across. My new fun thing to do is go on archival sites and watch old 50s-90s programs around world issues and how each recognized individual in various fields and countries came together to discuss many issues we still faces and the understanding of each group or individuals thoughts.

I read a study that was initially introduced to me as screenshots on Twitter about how illiterate college seniors were because they couldn't isolate single sentences out of context and then interpret them as metaphorical language, and the main conclusion of the study was that the largest gap in ability to distinguish between mis/disinformation and facts was how the student behaved when they encountered a word they didn't already know - did they look it up, did they guess based on surrounding words, or did they pretend that word didn't exist? The study found the students who looked it up were best equipped to spot misinformation because they were the most comfortable to admit when they're wrong and ask questions! The screenshots were... not representative of the study, which was also fascinating because it became a study in itself - how people reacted to the screenshots on Twitter. Did they go find the study, or did they accept the screenshots as the full context?
