@4345555: I did exactly that. I took photos and a video of my 6-month-old Rimowa before my flight. It had only been used a handful of times and was in perfect condition.
When I landed, it had severe dents, a bent wheel, and it no longer rolled properly. @American Airlines initially denied my claim, calling it “normal wear and tear.” It wasn’t until I told them I would be filing a complaint with the DOT that they acknowledged the damage.
Since then, the process has been incredibly frustrating. Instead of taking responsibility and resolving the claim promptly, American Airlines has made me jump through hurdle after hurdle. Now they’re requiring me to send my $2,500 Rimowa to their repair contractor, Rynn’s Luggage, even though I’ve explained that I’m not comfortable shipping an expensive suitcase without written assurance that any repair will preserve my Rimowa warranty.
This damage was caused while the bag was in American Airlines’ care. I shouldn’t have to risk losing my manufacturer’s warranty or spend weeks chasing a resolution. Travelers shouldn’t have to fight this hard just to have an airline take responsibility for damage they caused.
Taking photos and video before your flight is one of the best things you can do. Without that proof, I can’t imagine where my claim would be. @American Airlines
