It works because he wasn’t prancing catholic when he got married and Hinduism doesn’t have the same rules are the monotheistic religions (Islam, Judaism, Christianity) about being equally yoked

My parents were interdenominational and while it’s not a perfect analogy I can say that I was truly exposed to both interpretations by doing every other week at each respective church.
