A Grade two learner, nine-year-old Motjaritje Tjambiru died in a fire that engulfed her family's shack in Kanaan A, Gobabis. The incident has left the family in shock and mourning. NBC News spoke to the young girl's aunt, who recounted the heartbreaking scene and the pain the family is enduring following the tragedy. According to the family, Motjaritje was asleep with her mother and siblings when the fire broke out, turning what should have been an ordinary night into a devastating loss. "The fire started while my sister and her children were sleeping in their shack. The first person to wake up was the 13-year-old boy; luckily, the key was in the keyhole. Another girl who was sleeping next to my sister quickly grabbed the youngest child, who is a twin, and ran outside. My sister grabbed the other twin. When she ran back to go grab the little girl who is no longer with us. The fire had become so big, and she couldn't get to her. She ran in anyway, and I quickly pulled her away because the fire had spread very quickly. This little girl died right in front of our eyes. She was very close to the door but stuck between the bed and the corrugated iron," narrates the aunt of the late Motjarie, Komondjira Tjambiru. The tragedy left the family struggling to rebuild after losing their belongings in the fire. With no source of income, Tjambiru noted that they are facing significant challenges as they prepare for the child's funeral and try to support the surviving family members. "I'm asking the public to please help us because we really have no means to even have a funeral. We all don't work; I was laid off work because I am sick, currently going through cancer treatment. My sister and the children also need some clothes and corrugated iron because the fire took everything from them.
