To some extent, I feel like this perpetuates the cycle that you’re trying to break.

I always ask educators the same question when it comes to the use of AI for our assignment. How exactly do you intend to stop them? I have started asking students to provide the prompt that they use for AI to generate the assignment. That’s how you tell if they have any original thought when it comes to using it for assignments. If you submit a prompt that says “write a paper about the use of digital media to educate the public on vaccines,“ then I will absolutely return your paper or give you a zero. If you send me a prompt that shows all of the material and notes that you have come up with plus you have attached articles that you have found related to the subject and asked AI for ideals on how to create a synthesis of this material, then that is how we use it effectively. This really goes back to the need for educators to be trained on how to use AI because AI is not leaving.

I specifically put in my rubric that if it lacks specificity or depth and mimics generic AI output, they can’t get higher than a C grade. They can use AI if they want, but if they want a good grade AI won’t get them there

I literally wrote a paper for an assignment myself and sent it through grammerly and it said it was AI. And I had the references. I don’t think the checkers are really correct. But I definitely get it.

I’m an English teacher, and I love writing. I have a blog I write, and one day (because of excessive AI use in my classroom), I decided to run a few of my blog posts through a checker. It told me it was 80% AI. Then I started running more. Consistently, it told me my own writing was AI. You can’t write well and not be flagged.

My colleague says she has her students turn in digitally and come to class the next day and write on paper what their paper was about.

Well, I'm an older student and learned certain grammar and syntax. I learned how to use hyphens, En dashes, and Em dashes. I am also a technical writer. Apparently, I write like AI. I had to share an old paper (handwritten) to prove that my work wasn't AI. lol

Create a quiz over the paper submitted using AI. If they wrote it, they should ace the quiz!

I issue of 59% F. Then make them meet with me to discuss their ideas and their defend their claims. If they succeed I grade it again. If not, they can do it again or keep the F. Do that once or twice - they catch on. Students talk to each other 😂

I’ve found that AI just doesn’t do a good job so I just grade them on the quality of the work without even telling them it’s v obvious that this was written by an AI tool.

The comments here are incredibly disturbing. Teachers should be grading their students’ work—not AI. I’m a college professor who grades hundreds of essays each semester. I know the struggle. But this is not the answer.

As a teacher who gave up with the AI written papers, this is the solution I needed! Did I know they were using it? Yes. Did I try at first by putting through 3 separate AI checkers? Yes. Did I give up and just start grading them without checking for AI? Yes! I'm doing this with my seniors this year! Can you share your ethical vs. non-ethical ways to use AI? I have done this, too, but I want to see if you have ideas I haven't thought of.
