As my former ceo father said: “would they give you two weeks if they were going to fire you?”

They can lay you off that same day. You can leave anytime you want. ESPECIALLY if you already have a new job lined up!

"The US and many other places"...
The United States is literally the only country in the world that has at-will employment, and it's not even universal within the United States.

I have two weeks notice once and got the same BS they needed 6-8 weeks notice and that was unacceptable. I responded by packing up my desk and leaving that day. My new job (soooo much better) was thrilled to have me start earlier. Toxic workplaces are a thing you don't have to tolerate.

In Germany it is fixed by law as minimum for both sides. It is usually a month. It even grows the longer you are employed at the same company. If you just leave they will sue you.

What if their policy is you lose any gained payouts without a 2 week notice? Such as paid time off?

A company that laid me off gave me six weeks of continued work, and then 13 weeks of severance, plus paid for insurance for that 13 weeks as well

ive had to make the difficult decision to fire a couple of my managers in the past. when that happens, I always pay them for an additional 2 weeks without them being there so they can find a new job.

In Norway, the legal notice period is one month if you quit your job or if you’re dismissed. After ten years with the same employer, the notice period increases to three months.
That said, many employment contracts include a longer mutual notice period. Two months is quite common, meaning both the employee and the employer must give two months’ notice before the employment ends.

I gave my old job 2 weeks notice and they said I needed to give 4 weeks notice. I answered by saying 4 weeks is not legally binding and they said yep it’s written on your contract.

I don’t understand the concept of a notice period being “company policy”. Cool. It’s company policy. I don’t work for you anymore.

in the Netherlands you have a "opzegtermijn". Most of the time is at least 1 month. the longer you work at a company, the longer the opzegtermijn can be.

here in italy, you have to give a notice. it’s illegal to not give it, but that is only if you have a contract. if you work without a contract (many bosses do this to not pay taxes) then you can quit when you want without a notice

Don’t give two weeks when they lay you off. I got laid off in September, got one minute notice. Even though i was salary they paid me to the minute.

If you are worried about not having a good reference from a supervisor, you can use colleagues as a reference. Just ask people you worked alongside who has reasonable knowledge about your work

this depends on the career. some ethic codes would be violated if you left clients without services because you didn't give your employer the opportunity to replace you. you could lose your license to practice.

And honestly the trend of making people pack up and leave immediately upon giving notice is scaring people away from giving notice at all. I recently, very respectfully, tendered resignation at my job and was immediately escorted to pack up my office and out of the building. This was not an entry-level, hourly job. It was a professional, credentialed position in an industry I’ve worked in for decades.
