“I didn’t want to be an actor. I was 18. My whole life at that point was cars and wanting to race,” Robert Carradine - Bobby to his friends - told the MidSouth Nostalgia Festival in 2025. “I didn’t want to be an actor. I was 18. My whole life at that point was cars and wanting to race,” Robert Carradine - Bobby to his friends - told the MidSouth Nostalgia Festival in 2025. He was living with his brother, David, at his place in Laurel Canyon, making music, racing cars, just enjoying being a part of the counterculture, when David approached him with an unexpected opportunity. He’d been offered the role of “Long Hair” in the new John Wayne project, “The Cowboys.” David was "somewhat to the left of John Wayne,” he told Word on Westerns, and so was he, which made them both a little skeptical of working with The Duke. Besides, “David said, ‘I don’t want to be the guy who shoots John Wayne in the back,” Robert said. “But hey — there’s a bunch of kids in this movie. Why don’t you go meet those people?’” Robert was skeptical. And a little nervous. But David persisted. “‘You got everything to gain,’ he said, ‘and nothing to lose,’ Robert recalled. “I thought about that. Everything to gain and nothing to lose.” “So I went; and I auditioned for [the part of] a kid named Slim who was scared to death in the scene. Luckily, Robert Carradine was also scared to death!” he laughed. “So, I nailed it; and that’s how I got in the movie. That’s how it started.” He was an actor. Once there, his nerves must’ve settled some, because he made a pretty bold move on his fourth day of shooting. “I don’t even think we’d even been there a week. And we were shooting the scene where the cowboys start duking it out and I jump off the corral fence to save this kid," he told the MidSouth Nostalgia Festival in 2025. “John Wayne breaks us up and tells me to ‘… get back on that fence where you belong.’ And me, with my week’s worth of experience in motion pictures, I say, ‘Hold on a second, Mr. Wayne. I don’t think you should tell me to get back on the fence where I belong. I think you should just tell me to get back on the fence because I’m the head kid.' ” It went about as well as you’d expect. "He reduced me to tears. That’s how bad he chewed me out," Robert shared. But you know what? He changed the line. "So, I was right,” he concluded. “Or maybe I’m just an asshole for thinking I could tell John Wayne how to act." Either way, it was the beginning of a long and successful career, highlighted by roles in “The Big Red One,” “Django Unchained,” “The Long Riders,” “Mean Streets,” “Coming Home,” and “Go Ask Alice,” as well as iconic turns in “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Lizzie McGuire.” I can’t let the opportunity pass to mention the cult classic “TAG: The Assassination Game,” which I’ve been waiting to stream forever. His whole family are actors, from his father John, his brothers Keith and David, with whom he acted in “The Long Riders” alongside the Guests, the Keachs and the Quaids, his niece Martha Plimpton, and his daughter, Ever Carradine, who grew up with her single father on movie sets and is now a successful actress herself. She, too, had a part in “The Long Riders,” at only two years-old. The Duke turned out to be an alright guy, for what it’s worth. “Once we got on location and we were in the presence of Mr. Wayne,” Carradine recalled at the Cowboy Channel Cowboy Christmas. “His charisma, his physical presence, it was pretty overwhelming.” After the film wrapped, Wayne was signing autographs and Robert waited in line for his. "He's about to put the pen to paper, and he looks at me,” he told INSP in 2022. “He goes, 'Carradine, you stupid son-of-a-bitch! I just made a picture with you!’ and gave it back unsigned.” Young Bobby took it as a compliment. “We’re colleagues." The John Wayne Estate issued a statement remembering him as “a special part of Duke's cinematic history." #popculturehistorian #robertcarradine #revengeofthenerds #johnwayne #lizziemcguire
