Not because I always feel calm, but because I know my energy affects the people around me. If I add yelling, frustration, or panic to an already chaotic situation, it usually just creates more noise. So instead, I take a deep breath and focus on one thing at a time. I don't try to fix everything all at once. I regulate myself first, then start working through the chaos piece by piece. I've found that when I can stay steady, the kids often start to settle too. Not every time, not perfectly, but more often than not. And before long, we're able to move through it and get back to our day. That's not to say I never get overwhelmed, because I absolutely do.
