Most of the gradients refer to the steepest section of the run rather than the entire descent, but either way, these are not exactly gentle cruisers. 8. Gamsleiten 2, Obertauern 🇦🇹 Up to 70% Short, steep and usually heavily mogulled. A proper Austrian leg-burner. 7. Pas de Chavanette / Swiss Wall, Portes du Soleil 🇫🇷🇨🇭 Up to 76% More survival mission than carving piste. Famous for huge moguls and bad decisions. 6. Mont Fort, Verbier 4 Vallées 🇨🇭 Often listed around 77% A bit of a grey area for this list, as it’s more steep ski route than classic piste. 5. Harakiri, Mayrhofen 🇦🇹 Up to 78% Probably Austria’s most notorious groomed black. Much easier to say yes to from the lift than halfway down. 4. Langer Zug, Lech Zürs 🇦🇹 Up to 80% Starts with a proper sting, then turns into a brilliant long descent back towards Lech. 3. Lauberhorn, Wengen 🇨🇭 Around 85% World Cup history, huge speed, ridiculous scenery. One of skiing’s great race runs. 2. Streif, Kitzbühel 🇦🇹 Up to 85% The downhill course everyone knows for a reason. The Mausefalle alone is enough to make your legs go. 1. Kandahar, Garmisch-Classic 🇩🇪 Up to 92% Home to the Freier Fall, which literally means “free fall”. Not exactly subtle.
