it's not animation that's weird, it's the character design style, we are used to the grotesque rough looking shrek, this visual style looks more cute and rounded. It's very weird that they changed the style so much. It made me think of the Trolls movie, I checked and in fact the Art Director worked on Trolls, the Croods, etc. you can see his influence
