I sometimes think about the lone American astronaut on the ISS during 9/11. He could see the smoke, I imagine in a way he felt very close and yet so far away. Also, the single Cosmonaut in space when the Soviet Union fell. Both of them came back to their home being profoundly different, not just because their own experience but because the world was different

My sister was on her first ever holiday with her bf in America, was due to fly back on the day of 9/11 (she was in Florida though not NYC, but her flights home got delayed) I remember I pulled a sicky from school that day and it was on every channel, I can still see people jumping vividly, horrible.
