IIRC the bomb tech was actually supposed to have it armed before they took off, but the crew of Enola Gay weren't 100% sure they would be able to get the plane off the runway with that amount of weight in the plane. So the bomb tech spent the entire night prior to flight practicing the procedure to arm the bomb from the bomb-bay during flight. they didn't want to blow the airbase up if they crashed on takeoff, but also didn't want to destroy the bomb meant to end the war by it exploding before it got to japan
