I see it differently. My personal growth helped me understand and accept my frightened, needy, imperfect parts. As a result, I became more empathetic, not less. I judge my partner less, try less to fix her, get into fewer power struggles, regulate myself faster, and more easily recognize the fear, pain, or unmet needs behind difficult behavior. In my experience, that doesn't create distance in a relationship, it creates greater closeness and understanding.

Me and my ex husband used to stand in the kitchen drinking most nights for nearly a decade. We split and I got sober we could never reconcile because I have now moved past that and grown into a better version of myself. I am starting to believe this journey called life is more about self love and growth rather than being with someone else romantically
