For World Octopus Day, a rare glimpse of the glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi), one of the ocean’s most elusive and transparent creatures. With nearly see-through skin, only its eyes, optic nerves, and digestive tract are visible. I was on this expedution when this deep-sea cephalopod was filmed thousands of meters below the surface. It was during a Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition to the Phoenix Islands in the central Pacific. I was lucky enough to be one of the first people ever to see this animal in the wild.
