Pemmy’s Backstory 🥹 Part 1 We were driving down the road when cars ahead of us started swerving and honking. As we got closer, we saw why. Two dogs were literally stuck together. At the time, I had no idea what happens when dogs mate… well, this is what happens. The male gets “locked” inside the female for a while after mating. Seeing this, our hearts broke 💔 Not only for these two babies, but for all the street dogs out there going through this every single day. Yes, it’s a natural part of life, but it’s also what keeps the heartbreaking cycle of street dogs going. Every unspayed and unneutered street dog means more puppies born into hardship. More dogs without care, starving, struggling, and suffering. We couldn’t just drive by. We pulled over and waited. As soon as they separated, they both bolted. We prioritized the female, knowing that helping her meant we could prevent her from going through a painful and likely harmful pregnancy. It also meant preventing an entire litter of puppies from being born into a world that, sadly, wouldn’t care for them. She ran into the rundown Pemex gas station (that’s how she got her name, Pemmy 🫶🏼). She was terrified. It took us almost an hour to get a leash on her and walk her out to the Rescue Rig. She was covered in fleas and ticks, way too scared to let us touch her, and not ready to trust just yet. We scheduled her spay right away. Over the next few days, we loved on her as much as she’d allow, reminding her she was safe. When it was time to drop her off for surgery, she was ready, ready for her second chance at life. Spaying and neutering saves lives. It stops the suffering before it starts. It’s one of the most powerful ways we can make a lasting impact in rescue. And it’s how Pem Pem’s story with us began. Stay tuned for Part 2 — Pemmy’s transformation 🐾✨🌊
