Murder fantasy or self-defense? Evidence the jury never heard is now coming to light as 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony fights his murder conviction. At a recent hearing seeking a new trial, attorneys revealed potentially damaging evidence about both teenagers that had been kept from the jury. Prosecutors say Anthony sent a text fantasizing about stabbing someone and “licking the blood off the blade.” They also say he sent a photo of a knife with the message, “I’m lowkey on the verge.” Anthony was sentenced in June to 35 years in prison for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a 2025 high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. Anthony admitted to the stabbing but said he acted in self-defense. Jurors rejected that claim and convicted him of murder. The defense, meanwhile, presented evidence alleging Metcalf had a history of fighting and using racist language. Both sides had agreed before trial to keep potentially inflammatory character evidence about the teenagers from the jury.
