Determined to free him, Nadine spent months secretly enrolled in helicopter flight lessons under the alias Lena Rigon. On the morning of May 26, 1986, Nadine put her training to the ultimate test. She rented a white Eurocopter Gazelle, navigating the low skies directly over Paris toward the fortress-like prison. Inside the walls, Michel played his part by using nectarines painted to look like real hand grenades to intimidate guards and force his way onto the prison roof. As Nadine expertly hovered the aircraft just above the rooftop structure, Michel leaped aboard. The couple flew a short distance to a nearby football pitch, abandoned the helicopter, and vanished into a waiting getaway car.
