NYC just banned AI in classrooms, Pre-K through 8th grade. Mayor Mamdani made the announcement. It affects roughly 600,000 students, starting this school year. 38 previously approved school programs are losing their AI components because they don’t meet the new safety and oversight standards. Companion chatbots are banned across all grades, including high school. Mamdani said kids need teachers and human connection to grow, and need to be able to work through hard problems on their own. This is a one year moratorium. During that time, a new Technology in Schools coalition made up of students, teachers, and policymakers will study the impact and publish recommendations for what comes next.
