@cbsnews: "Don't ban social media!" Teens and parents reacted to the U.K.'s announcement of their proposed law to ban children under 16 from using platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday that the U.K. would go even further than other nations by also blocking children from accessing "harmful functions" such as livestreaming and the ability to communicate with strangers, and by extending the restrictions to gaming sites. He said the ban would protect children from content that is "designed to be addictive."

I say to leave the option to have it open. All the arguments I am reading attempt to generalise younger users under one viewpoint: "children need it to express themselves", and then someone says "there are other ways", and then someone else replies "they may be shy" or something. And this keeps on. We have to consider each individual respectively, as we all have different methods of coping and percolating our identity through communities. Thus, leave the option for social media open so that we have more diversity. This means that people can choose to convey themselves online, or in-person. But this returns us to where we were? How do we protect each other from harmful content? In reference to Sonia Livingstone and James Lunt, we must protect the citizen, but not limit the consumer. The problem, of course, is regulation: can it keep up with modern technology? As we do not live in Utopia, this is not plausible. Nevertheless, regulatory bodies need to establish a new method of regulation to protect the citizen without limiting the consumer.

It’s on PARENTS to monitor what their children are seeing, not apps, not the government, all apps should have is the option of filtering specific content, everything else is unnecessary and controlling

This is not a social media ban. It is censorship of selected content or viewpoints

“A bit like smoking, it will just gradually ease away” (not sure if she meant the temptation for social media or if social media should gradually ease away) but I’m not completely sure she knows what goes on when children are outside.

I’m not looking for something perfect, just someone genuine—someone to love, laugh with, and understand each other through every season of life. I believe the most beautiful connections are built on trust, kindness, and shared dreams. It would be wonderful to meet someone whose heart speaks the same language as mine, and together create a love that feels peaceful, passionate, and forever worth cherishing. ❤️

You can’t ban kids from social media, they’ll always find ways around it. They can still socialise on Xbox/PC/PS, text and access the internet

At least give us something else do to. There are no places for teenagers to hang out (like proper centres and that) or the places there are too expensive for one day.
