The perpetual free trial was actually a brilliant marketing scheme. People got used to using it at home so when they went to work, they brought it with them. That's why they make all of their money in corporate volume licensing.

A few years ago I did an experiment with WinZip, WinRAR and 7Zip. The RAR format outperformed all of them in compression by a lot. You get smaller files, you get corruption protection, you can create password protected archives and you can create self extracting archives as well as split large archives into multiple smaller pieces. WinRAR is the best option. Dont come at me with 7Zip. I tried them all.
