@emsoslayy: EDIT: READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING!!! some of you are missing the entire point of this post!!! IF YOU ENJOY READING BOOKS YOU ARE A READER PERIOD!!! not once in this post did I say classics are not harder to understand/comprehend than other books. The point of this post is that if you read books, then you are a reader. Many times, those who strictly read classics develop a superiority complex and tell those who do not enjoy classics that they are not real readers. This is simply not true. No matter what books you read, you are a reader. This is not me saying that all books are equal quality literature, because of course that’s not true! And yes, some books are strictly entertainment, which is FINE! What is not fine is gatekeeping the hobby of reading and telling someone they are not a real reader for not enjoying classic books. Let’s all just be a community of readers together and bond over that. Especially when our society is in a literary crisis. On a separate note, just because I enjoy reading fantasy books does not mean I do not have the ability to read and understand a classic book! Everyone has different tastes. So attempting to offend me, tell me I don’t have the ability to understand classics, or use the fact that I enjoy fantasy as a way to undermine my intelligence says way more about you than it does me (@ many people in the comments!) #BookTok #classicbooks #romantasy #romantasybooks #hottake

as someone who reads both, i don't even understand how this is a debate? if you like to read, you're a reader.

There’s a nuance to this. Reading in general — esp in the digital age — is valuable, but there is inherently more mental stimulation and knowledge intake from critically reading and analyzing substantial works of literature as compared to a Colleen Hoover romance, which mostly consists of rehashed themes and non-intensive dialogues, plots, and character analysis

it doesn't make you more of a "reader" per se, but it does make you more cultured and educated.

More of a reader? No, more of someone who reads meaningful things? Yes. That’s the whole point.

I wouldn’t say ONLY reading classics. But, reading classics as well does make you a reader with a better understanding of literature. Which, is entirely what degree seekers read to get their degree. Just better understanding overall not to discredit nobody’s reading genres.

that’s like saying a professional chef isn’t better than a McDonald’s line cook because they’re both cooking food. Not the same. 🤷♀️

It doesn’t make you more of a reader but it definitely does make you more well read, if that makes sense. There’s a lot to be gained from reading difficult books and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone

Classics are meant to educate and offer new perspectives. Which is why a lot of them are read in middle and high school, to educate you. Whereas books you read for fun often have no deeper ideas, they do not teach you anything. So yes, reading classics over those books does make you a ‘bigger’ reader essentially. Besides you can have plenty of fun reading classics

also art is quite literally subjective!! the “fun” “not well written” books are well written if they make me FEEL something and if i engage with them. and everyone uses acotar as an example but it was better written than any classic i read in school 😬

Yes, people who read classic literature are more advanced than people who only read low quality entertainment. This is coming from someone who reads AND enjoys both. Read a few good classics and you’ll understand what I mean

A smut book every now and again is fun. Some of them are downright hilarious. But if that’s absolutely the only thing a person reads I don’t see much point. There isn’t even any entertainment value. The plot’s are all virtually the same. Especially in these new ones that are hitting the shelves at lightning speed. Reading other genres doesn’t have to equal only reading the classics.

Mmmm no it does. At least if you also enjoy entertainment books. But we don’t have to get insecure just because someone enjoys a hobby more than someone else

You’re right but classics are higher quality and lowk after reading one classic my whole writing style changed and I grew my vocab. But that doesn’t meant that reading others genres aren’t bad in the end it’s still a work of art so 🤷♀️

many classics actually include historical events in their plot, meaning it doesn’t make you a “better reader” per se but it does make you more educated.
