This strikes me as very unrealistic. I see your numbers and how you ran them down, but two cars are paid off? Or they only need one car with four kids in this hypothetical. No kid gets any routine extra curricular, no vacation (unless they save all $400 of their flex fund for at least half the year and only got places without flights), no copays or medical deductibles - with four kids it seems likely you go to the doctor at some point, no pets, no TV subscriptions for entertaining 4 kids, no service for vehicles, no tagging vehicles(annually but amortized monthly), birthday presents for at least 6 people for each person in the family(if that comes out of the $400 and subscriptions and friends birthdays etc then goodbye one annual vacation) I didn’t see the original video to speculate, but I think this drastically misses the mark.

Who me? :
My electric bill is 600/mo. Gas $100. Water $80 and we have a well for watering. Car insurance with one teenager is over $300/mo. And I live in a low COL area. This is not realistic at all.

works until something goes wrong with the house or car, or a big medical bill hits. we just got hit with medical bill + vet bill + electrician bill in the same month and would be screwed if our budget was this tight

In this model, the family is one emergency away from potential financial ruin. You’re right that’s possible, and lots of people make it work with less, but a lot of those people are up to their ears in credit card debt and overwhelmed on a daily basis with the stress of trying to make ends meet.

Bare, bare, bare minimum. None of the kids play sports or want to do marching band? Need braces? Teens gonna drive? Wanna help them through college? Also, we’re lucky my husband can carry our health insurance for ~$600/mo. If I did it through my job it would be $2100/mo for much worse coverage.
