The incident, which involved Ford Ranger Raptor, occurred on the southbound lanes of the N1 highway near the Ysterberg cutting between Polokwane and Mokopane. According to eyewitnesses on the scene, the double-cab bakkie suddenly began emitting thick columns of black smoke from the engine bay while in motion. The driver manager to pull over into the shoulder of the freeway just before the vehicle was entirely engulfed by violent flames. Emergency services and local fire brigade units were immediately dispatched to the scene to combat the blaze.
