I have been telling my wife for 47 years to start a sentence with my name to get my attention before moving on to the main question. My brain never stops calculating randon stuff. I need to get out of my thoughts before I can open up something new.

Happens to me because someone’s always interrupting my internal dialogue, so I need to hear it again because I was busy with another conversation

She explained it perfectly AND that's why it's super annoying when the person CHANGES WHAT THEY SAID instead of just repeating it word for word 😭

I know a few women who do this and I’ve asked them why. They have no idea. I know one person who says “huh?” after everything I say to her but I don’t repeat myself and just give her a second and she responds. I ask her if she is having trouble hearing. She insists she isn’t. So, I ask her why she says huh all the time, she says she doesn’t know. Wth

Wait does anyone experience something similar: I will go to say/do something and be interrupted and instead of answering or doing it I “buffer” and say/do the original thing I was thinking in my head. Then I will “buffer” going back to what they said. Like I can’t respond or do something without getting my original thought out first. Playing catch up.

I’m 61, AuDHD, and it makes perfect sense to me. It’s like you hear the sound but your brain needs more time to process what you heard.

AuDHD here, I personally have experienced this, buffering is the best way to explain echoic memory and it’s hard to explain it any other way. I love how easily you explained it, it took me years..

just so you know from the other perspective it's annoying to have to repeat yourself and then get stopped halfway through repeating yourself it's like getting ready to run and then being tripped as you're already running. also people like me value authentic communication and the way you say something when it pops into your head is authentic and repeating it you lose everything it's almost like you don't even want to keep the conversation going because you've lost that moment. a trick might be starting to repeat what they said which gives you time to think or say something else like 'oh hold on' you said and then say the part that you remember. because repeating what you said and doing it multiple times absolutely takes the steam out of someone's energy so it's like a horrible option if you can not do it maybe there's a better option. or maybe there are other people who are like that who will get it.
