dogs will recognize siblings years later. I'm sure the mares know which horses were their babies. they just don't see them as their BABY anymore.

Google university states: “Yes, horses have excellent long-term memories and can absolutely recognize their babies (and vice versa) after being apart for over a year. They use a combination of smell, vocalizations (whickers), and visual cues (facial and body features) to identify one another. While recognition is strong, the way they interact will likely change:The Dynamic Shifts: Once a foal is weaned, the mare no longer views it as a dependent offspring. When reunited, the mother might be indifferent or even bossy toward the returning youngster, sometimes greeting them with pinned ears or a squeal.Foals Remember More: Studies indicate that yearlings and older foals often show a strong preference for their mothers when reunited, approaching them first and attempting to reconnect.”

I like to think they know its their baby but their instincts are also like "ugh! why are you back?! I weaned you!" 😂

I think once the weaning happens and they are no longer viewed as babies it becomes a hierarchy thing, as many animals.

I know horses don’t necessarily have human feelings but I also think all parents of teenagers can relate.

Dr.Bookwyrm :
I would think that they definitely remember, but instead of their reaction being “This is mine, I must protect it,” it’s “Oh yeah, I know that one,” and then they treat the baby the same way they would any other horse they’re familiar with.

People (like to) confuse human emotions and animal emotions. Yes, horses definitely have emotions, but not human emotions. Their emotions and way of thinking are way different than ours. Off topic, Kirby is going to be one gorgeous lady 🥰

I read that they do recognise their foals after weaning, even years later! But their behaviour is heavily influenced by their individual temperament and the respect the younger horse shows

It is interesting though. Because like dogs seem to remember their litter mates by scent . You would think animals have some kind of scent that they recognize as family, if you will.
