I work in Fairfax County schools. Many, many Christian parents wanna get rid of Eid, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kipur, and Diwali, which we have off currently. But when faced with the idea that they won’t get to take a long break around Christmas, they lose their minds. Christian kids can enjoy two weeks to travel for Christmas, but they don’t want Jews, Muslims, and Hindus to have one singular day off for their holidays. This is a diverse school district and affects many kids and staff.

As someone currently teaching IN FCPS I’ve just blocked every news agency reporting this as “taking away Christmas”. The district is far from perfect but they’re NEVER going to make everyone happy with the calendar.

I think the problem is why the question was even asked. Christmas is a nonnegotiable as is winter break. Fairfax also purposely decoupled Easter from spring break many years ago. There’s a reason the question was there.

Our district sends a calendar survey to both educators and parents. Last year we had 5 days of PD before the school year because parents requested it so as to limit disruptions during the year.

Also! Never mentioned in all of this is that this year's calendars were unusually challenging because the prior governor mandated additional training (good training! Science of Reading) AFTER calendars were approved (terrible timing) so districts had to amend calendars to account for the mandatory training (everyone trying their best in crap circumstances!)

FOX news would spin the ABCs as a conspiracy if they could 🙄The survey was so short (~8 questions) and lumped Christmas in with all other religious observances. Additionally it ‘conveniently’ neglected the massive number or teacher workdays and half days that significantly impacted the academic calendar.

As a program evaluator, yes. Sometimes you ask questions you likely know the answer to, but that data is valuable to share. And nobody wants a “winter” break more than teachers. 🤣

As an FCPS employee we need to just get federal holidays off. If would love to have a schedule where semester starts in August and ends in December. Semester two starts in January and ends the beginning of June. Currently kids start August 18 and finish June 17.

PWCS parent here, we do the same thing every year. We have added Eid, Diwali, Rosh Hashanah and others b/c it was requested and it prevents a large absenteeism for large segments of our students and parents who celebrate those days.

There should have never been any change to the American Public School Holiday List, doesn’t matter where you moved from or what you observed in your country. You’re here now, and America has its holidays that are nonnegotiable! As a parent you can pull your kid out of the school for holidays not observed.
