@canada_tattoos: Not a lot of client’s favorite but it does have its reasons. Hopefully this provides better explanation and takes away some of the frustration you might have about this rule ! #tattoodesign #tattooartist #tattooinfo #tattooprocess #tattoolife
Do artists tell clients there will be time on day of to make changes?

I know intellectually that it's fine to ask for changes day-of but I really struggle with it, especially if the design is fairly detailed and I'm worried that last minute changes will mess with the work that went into the details. I wish more artists would offer a 10-30 minute in-person consultation for a draft design. (I get the reasons that they don't, but it's something I personally would pay extra for.)

I was so surprised the most recent one I got didn’t get drawn UNTIL I was IN the shop. He drew it REALLY fast and it came out really cool but I hadn’t experienced that before.

In the 80’s-90’s there was this tattoo shop and body piercing the art was the sole owner. I inquired about his services showed him a sketch of a spider on a more or less tribal style ( Im a bad sketch guy) so I I told him if he can make it look better so he told me he will require a deposit first before we engage on that and for the price he will provide 3 designs based on the sketch and one of his own creation. He clarified that by paying I was getting ownership of the designs and if I wanted to go to another artist it was ok and use the designs. Well I started getting ink by him.

Not only that but i can’t wait days for a reply back from the client if changes need to be made because im working on other tattoo designs, art projects and being a dad. Time is valuable.

How do you feel about people who bring designs they’ve put together and selected you as an artist based on your style and skill?

quick question...how much would this cost to cover up my forearm tattoo

I will not work with an artist that won't show me the tattoo at least a day before the appointment. Preferably 2 or 3 days. I will happily pay any deposit and everything but I want time to look at, think about, and ask for changes on the art that I am paying to have permanently placed on my body. I don't want to feel pressured to make a decision like that right there in the studio, also I am really busy so scheduling things is already difficult and I want to avoid rescheduling things.

As a client I don't mind waiting till the appointment to see the final design. However I WANT and require at least a rough sketch mock up to know if I'm ok with it. More often than not I would personally prefer to pick a design by the artist from their open "wanna do" list.

This is why i am glad that i'm not super picky. The only piece I really plan tk be picky about is my Right arm cause i'm such a massive anime fan that I want it to be something I wont regret later

🔥🔥✨This is also why we like to set up consultations. We can sit down and talk about the design and roughing sketch out the layout or game plan on the design. So it’s not a blind reveal.✨

I wish I had more time to sit on this tattoo because when I go in for a tattoo I'm in too joyous and happy a mood to really analyze and this last tattoo has a piece that just doesn't make sense. I wish I had an option to view it 24 hours in advance.

My artist usually does the design the night before the appointment or together the day of. Last one I just showed him references and talked about what I wanted and he free handed it and it came out incredible. I try not to stress or be a pain. I give the artist freedom to do what they do. I trust them. It’s their career for a reason, plus it’s a relationship you build together over time when you find YOUR artist.

Personally the thing that tells me best if I’ve done my job correctly is observing facial and body expression when they see it for the first time. That will often tell me more than their words alone would.

I would like to know how much time is ok to sit and think about how the design will look on my skin. I wish I had taken a little more time with my last one, but I was scared to ask for the changes I wanted, and I didn't want to make the artist wait. but there are a couple thing I wish I had felt more confident about asking about.

I don’t mind waiting until the day of to see my design. But then again my friend is my artist, and she and I are damn near identical about what it should look like. I haven’t had a piece she’s done that I don’t love.

The comments on here are kinda crazy to me 😳 I give my artists vague ideas and let them do what they want. I’ve never changed anything about a design presented to me because I trusted the person.

I believe you. I know you’re right. But also I know my artist just hasn’t started the design till that morning.

this is how my artist does it. one time I was getting flowers for filler and I said no lillies, he thought only lillies. 😬😬 while beautiful not what I wanted. miscommunication, we started later than expected but he totally redrew it on the fly. and now its some of his favorite flowers hes done ❤️

I believe all of this. I spend 30-40 hours researching artists for the exact style I want.

This is why I do a couple designs. One of them is going to be closer to what the client wants and the other goes in the line book.

I got one preview of the non portfolio piece I have, it was like 3 days before and just a rough layout. We changed the size of a couple things after that and then did more changes on the day of.

As a traditional artist, I totally understand, respect and agree with all of these reasons lol. Deposits too!! If I’m getting tattooed by you I’ve been peeping your portfolio for a hot minute
