You all liked my laundry product ranking and asked how to actually use them, so here we go. Chlorine bleach: I’d move away from it, since the risk usually outweighs the reward. If you insist, dilute it, use the bleach compartment, and run a cleaning cycle after. Laundry sanitizers and oxygen bleach do the job better. Laundry sanitizer: Fabric softener slot with a 16 minute rinse. Or soak in 1 gallon of cold water with 2 capfuls for 15 minutes, then rewash. Enzymatic stain removers: A small amount directly on the stain, tamped in with up and down motions. Let it sit at least an hour, ideally overnight. I keep a bottle on my hamper and pretreat right away. Scent beads: Into the drum before clothes. White vinegar: Softener slot. It dissolves leftover detergent and minerals so clothes feel less crunchy. Acidic rinse products: Rinse slot. Citric acid outperforms vinegar’s acetic acid. Into the drum: Baking soda, Calgon, borax, washing soda, powdered oxygen bleach, and enzymatic boosters. Soaking: Use enzymatic boosters or oxygen bleach. Oxygen bleach needs 140°F (60°C) water. Soak a few hours or overnight, then wash. 3% hydrogen peroxide: Spray on stubborn stains and air dry indoors, out of the sun, since UV plus peroxide causes yellowing. Washable fabrics only, and test a hidden spot first. Detergent: Dosing depends on water hardness, load size, and soil level. Start at 1 tbsp. Small load, soft water? 1 tbsp. Dirty medium load, hard water? 3 to 4 tbsp. European detergents include a dosing chart. America needs to catch up. #LaundryTips #LaundryScience #StainRemoval
