@drmakkani: A normal A1c does not mean diabetes is gone. It means it is being managed. Remission is not reversal. The underlying metabolic vulnerability, insulin resistance, impaired beta cell function & genetic predisposition does not disappear because the numbers normalized. The biology did not change. The inputs did. Staying in remission requires the same habits that got you there. This is general education only, not personal #Type2Diabetes #DiabetesRemission #MetabolicHealth #InsulinResistance #A1C
I agree with the doctor. I lowered my A1C to 5.3 and became too relaxed. I stopped watching my portions and my numbers as closely. Over time, my A1C went back up to 7.3. That taught me an important lesson: diabetes management is a lifelong journey. Consistency matters.

also having a high A1c doesn't mean you do have type 2.

So completely confused now. My A1c has always been consistently fine, but for one outlier year (2025) of extreme stress and nutritional chaos during a remodel abroad. I lived 8 mo with no kitchen, was under high stress, constantly sleep deprived, relied on takeout food, —10 months later, THEN my A1c shot up to 6.0. That was ONE time. Six mo later, and via some hard work, it’s now back down to 5.5, so am I now considered a “lifelong pre-diabetic?” Is that what the result is now of one bad lab report? 😵💫 OR did I course-correct and I’m back to safe ground now?

Getting your numbers down is a great achievement, but diabetes management is a lifelong journey. If we return to old habits, the numbers can return too. Stay consistent and keep taking care of yourself.

I honestly think this should be applied to us all, especially as we age. Proper weight, diet and exercise is needed for us all under the sun. Whether a Diabetic or not. If it’s not insulin resistance, then it could be for your cardiovascular system or liver. Being sedentary with a poor diet works to no one’s advantage.

When with a wheelchair because of post polio? And A1C is 5.7 .. was 5.4 .. it’s because no movement? Thanks for this layman’s understanding Doc! 👏🏿👏🏿

Say it louder for the medical provider community! My ophthalmologist, hematologist and Gynecologist all said (after reviewing my list of current diabetes meds-and recent weight loss of 250 lbs)…Okay so I see A1C at 4.9? So you are no longer diabetic? I explained I will always be diabetic. At the moment, I’m a controlled diabetic - not cured- but fortunately controlled with a high dose medication, diet and movement. I’m stunned at how often I’m asked if my diabetes is gone because I take medication. I asked the eye doctor if he thought I was no longer near sighted as he continued my prescription for glasses. Yes, I see 20/20 because I have glasses but I will always be near sighted.

Yeah, it’s irritating that the conversation has become, “I’ve cured my diabetes,” because it’s so misleading. It’s not going away, folks; it requires a mindset that you will always be managing it.
