no, because people would just never hit to the centre

It won’t work. Teams do their homework and if the keeper always stood still the attacking team will know this and never go down the middle.

This is the type of conclusion someone would reach when they haven't got a clue about football.
If a keeper just stands still in the goal, every player would know a shot to the side is a certain goal.

If goalies stayed in the center the whole time, the kickers wouldn't shoot there anymore.

That is a perfect example of someone who looks at life through analytics and numbers. If robots where playing this would make perfect sense

ts just not true😭 the chance of them shooting left or right is greater than down the middle so theyve got a higher chance of saving the goal by diving

All the teams scout for penalty tendencies, if the keeper stands in the centre all the time the teams will immediately know and go left or right instead

There are few flaws with this hypothesis. 1) keeper’s jump and kick occur simultaneously- they don’t. in fact, many kickers delay a fraction of a second to wait for the goal keeper to move first. 2) Game theoretical- if a kicker knows that this “goalie” always repeats the move they will simply adjust and kick left or right.

If goalkeepers did that it might work for a brief time, but eventually they’d just stop kicking center and goals would go up

jump direction dosent metter in this statistic at all. If the kickers mostly shoot to the side why would the goalkeeper stay in the middle?

It’s like in the Game Theory. If the keepers start covering the middle more often, the strikers would quickly adjust. Also, there’re aren’t only 3 options. You’ve got upper-right and upper left corners, panenka penalty, power penalty, spot kick….. . The keepers covering the middle only 6% of the time seems about right

Are we assuming that the takers behaviour won't change when facing a keeper who always stays in the middle?

Thats not how it works. Players shoot in the center because of the keeper dives before he shoots. So probably they will not shoot ün the center if the keeper does not react

Be like Buffon stay down the middle for the first pen and all the other takers will now be scared to hit it down the middle whether the pen taker scored or missed when you stayed down the middle

It would work for a few games and then they just tell all their players hate this goalie stays in the middle on penalty shots and the goal percentage would go down to zero
