@1madamprezident: Target want that old thing back. Target is outside with a boombox blasting Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt, hoping Black folks flood the gates and fall back in love. The problem is that this moment reveals how disconnected many corporations have become from the communities they’re trying to reach. After George Floyd, many companies appeared willing to listen, invest, and engage. Whether genuine or performative, there was at least an acknowledgment that relationships required work. Today, many of those same companies seem exhausted, confused, or simply out of ideas. Instead of asking, “How do we create opportunity?” They ask, “Who can we pay to restore consumption?” That’s why the Jay-Z partnership caught my attention. Not because Jay-Z shouldn’t make money. Not because Target shouldn’t sell records. But because it highlights a bigger problem. Too many corporations have entire C-suites, consultants, and diversity executives, yet remain racially ignorant when it comes to what actual connection, trust, progress, and repair look like inside a community. A celebrity partnership is easy. Creating jobs is hard. Building businesses is hard. Restoring trust is hard. Consumption is easy. Construction is the work.
