And the thing is, while wishing for love in fictional settings is almost always portrayed as an overriding of autonomy and is almost always a “bad choice”, Bear’s wording of his wish was terrible as well. He didn’t wish for him and Nikki to have a happy romance, he didn’t wish for Nikki to like him more than as a friend, he didn’t even wish for her to simply fall in love with him. He wished for her to love him More Than Anyone else, which overrides even her love for herself. Bc even when you are head over heels for someone else, if you love and care about yourself you can take a step back and make logical decisions when things start to go wrong. Nikki couldn’t love herself, Bear took away her ability to put herself above others bc he literally wished her to be hyper focused on him and it showcases how shallow his supposed love was bc he didn’t really understand Nikki, he didn’t really know her at all, the minute things got out of hand he started to pull away causing her to freak out even more. It’s like the Rick and Morty episode where Rick gives the family a Me Seeks Box, he pulled a Jerry and started trying to get other people involved in his mistake instead of manning up. While the death of either of them would have snapped things back to normal, there was the other option, for him to take responsibility and acknowledge that he took her autonomy in act of naive selfishness and to give Wish Nikki her own Willow so she can make her own wish, which she obviously once she got her hands on one wished for him to love her back. It would have essentially trapped them both in the “sunken place” type state if course, but I don’t think anyone would have died.

great analysis!! i never considered that him not giving her the wish twice was him ignoring her autonomy twice. i just kinda figured he couldnt get nikki to make the wish since that would mean her new wish-self is gone. but the employee literally tells him “she’ll probably make whatever wish you want”

I have a theory he is dead/possessed the whole movie and the reason why he buys the one wish willow is because the demon inside him is trying to recruit more souls.

Nahh what REALLY gets me though is his phrasing of what he wanted Ian's wish to be. He basically tells him to "Say you wish that I never made my wish". And this was right after witnessing the death of his friend! He was still thinking about himself and wanted Ian's wish to still give him the chance of getting with her

Amazing analysis man. I also like to think Bear bought the 2 willows because he never intended for Nikki to use any. It seemed like he wanted Ian to undo his wish, and in doing so, hoped to get a second chance to modify the wish/make another. He was so distraught I think he was genuinely upset that he’d only have one chance to make it “right” and now he has to just hope things go back to normal. And like you mentioned he couldn’t take accountability for anything, even ending himself, so if she never broke that branch I’m sure he would’ve just stayed with her until she died

Reminds me of this old comedy that came out in year 2000, Bedazzled. This guy makes a deal with the devil, and he gets 7 wishes for his soul, and he keeps wishing for different ways that he can be with his coworker, Alison, who isn't romantically interested in him. The wishes keep going wrong, very monkey's-paw, classic "be careful what you wish for" type stuff, and when he gets to wish 7, he decides that he's not even going to make the wish because of how bad the wishes keep turning out, but Satan hates that because, dude, we had a deal, you get 7 wishes, I get your soul, so you're MAKING that wish whether you like it or not. his final wish was for Alison to have a happy life. Not for her to be with him, not anything for himself he could use to win her affection, but just for her to be happy. And the Devil is upset, but grants the wish. The devil reveals that he "won" so to speak. he made a selfless wish, so he gets to keep his soul.
