The Republican “family values" brand was never about morality. It was a marketing strategy engineered for control. From day one, right-wing strategists weaponized this phrase to rebrand a patriarchal power structure as "tradition" giving the men running it a blank check to police everyone else's private lives while completely exempting their own. This movement wasn't just built on controlling women; it was explicitly anti-Black. In the 1980s, the "welfare queen" myth was manufactured from a single anomaly to create a racial caricature, justifying the gutting of the social safety net. As Reagan’s own strategist, Lee Atwater, admitted on tape: they used abstract language like "states' rights" and "tax cuts" because the deliberate byproduct was that "Blacks get hurt worse than whites." From the legal erasure of coverture to anti-Black policy and modern Christian nationalism, the logic has never changed. By wrapping an unequal power structure in divine authority, they made dissent look like blasphemy. But when you look at the actual policy, defunding programs that feed children, blocking healthcare that saves mothers, and separating families the truth is undeniable: This was never about protecting families.
