@the_control_code: POV: your auntie loves you too much to not say something. 🫶 Surviving a partner’s strangulation = over 7x the odds of later becoming a homicide victim (Glass et al., J Emerg Med / Johns Hopkins, 2008). Strangulation appeared in 10% of abused women who survived vs. 43% of women killed by a partner. That number is about COERCIVE strangulation but it predicts lethality because of what it reveals about an abuser. Consensual choking is NOT a homicide predictor. Different claim, and I’m not making it. BUT consent doesn’t protect the brain. 2025 study: same women showed elevated neurofilament light (a blood marker of nerve-fiber injury) after choking sex but not non-choking sex. The brain registers oxygen loss regardless of consent (Frontiers in Global Women’s Health, 2025). Over half of college-aged women report being choked during sex; ~1 in 4 first experienced it between ages 12–17 (Herbenick et al.; PLOS One, 2026). “He choked me” sounds like intimacy. “He strangled me” is attempted homicide. We made the word ordinary, and the violent version hides inside the ordinary one. Consent governs the relationship. It does not govern the tissue. Sources: Glass et al. I would like to point out the last sentence of the Women's Frontier Health Paper that you're citing to prove injury. "We emphasize that our findings do not imply neurological injury per se, but rather biological responses consistent with transient ischemic stress. Longitudinal studies integrating cumulative exposure history, neuroimaging, and behavioral outcomes will be required to clarify short- and long-term consequences."

@AdventuresofFF :
kids in the 90s used to do this in the hallway to eachother to see how long before they passed out. seemed like a bad idea to me at the time.

Are you aware of if the study controlled for “proper technique”? I’ve been taught in sexual education spaces that you can lowkey risk with proper hand placement / less pressure on the trachea

Research shows that even when it's consensual it still leads to higher homicide rates

I’ve experienced this consensually, non consensually (I’m a dv survivor), and also I grew up doing martial arts for over a decade so i experienced it in that context too. I can’t speak for every person, but for me it was VERY different. I’m not going to argue that it might affect your brain. However, I know for myself (and my trauma therapist) that a lot of recovery was also from the trauma of going through dv as an entire experience, not just the choking. Also, choking with the intent to harm someone is going to look different than it would consensually or in martial arts practice too. Like it felt different physically. I’m not saying it’s good for your health, but I think it’s a lot more complicated than this ya know? No disrespect at all btw:) I just think it’s really complicated and there’s a lot of nuance and variables I don’t see in this discussion (just in general not specifically in this video)

Yes, and any violence enacted on your body is damaging you whether you consent to it or not. The body registers a threat whether you chose it or not. Arousal doesn’t equal physical safety.
