It uses two very low-energy X-ray beams to measure bone mineral density, helping diagnose conditions like osteoporosis and assess fracture risk. DEXA uses much less radiation than other medical imaging exams. A typical scan usually delivers about 1-10 microsieverts (uSv), compared to a chest X-ray at roughly 100 uSv and a CT scan, which can be several thousand uSv. A microsievert (uSv) is one-millionth of a sievert and measures the potential biological impact of ionizing radiation on the human body. The amount of radiation is often comparable to or less than the natural background radiation most people receive in a day just living on earth.
