If your survival chances increase if your friend survives, then altruism is the best option. For example, imagine you and your friend are by the trees and you spot a predator about to eat your friend. If you scream, you guarantee your friend's survival but reduce your own survival chances to 50%. The average survival chance in a similar scenarios becomes 75% among the population. In the case of cowardice, only 50% survive. This means that, for a social species that benefits from the group, altruistic behavior will win in the long run.

I dont know where this video goes, but in real life Altruism is a valid strategy because it helps your family more often than not. Altruistic family/community units win out over selfish individuals forming a community. Even if you die, the altruistic gene lives on in your family. Otherwise, the video would be right. If there was a "selfless" gene, it would die out
