No one really knows who built Teotihuacan. Many civilizations flourished in Mesoamerica for about 6000 years at different time periods.

by Mayan, Otomi, Zapotec people, and other cultures of the time, Teotihuacan was a multicultural city; it was not just one culture, it was a multi-ethnic center of commerce

For context . When the Aztecs stumbled upon the ruins of what we know today as Teōtihuacān , which roughly translates to ( Birthplace of the Gods ) . They didn’t know who or why they built such a magnificent massive place ! They wrote that they found the city painted in Crimson Red Pigment , and that some of temples inside were lined with Mica mineral powder . Today we know that mica is an electron converter that can carry currents and electricity 😳

No one really knows, the Spanish destroyed/changed a lot of the scriptures that included developmental history of the Mesoamerican empires. They refused to acknowledge these tribes contributed to anything well above them. So unfortunately, no one will ever really know

They’re also not pyramids, more like temple platforms because of their flat tops and how they structurally built.

According to the INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History), a Mexican institute, architectural development is believed to have begun in the 2nd century BC when the Pyramids of the Moon and the Sun began to be built, along with the Avenue of the Dead. At that time, it is believed that several groups, including the Otomi, Totonac, and Nahua, held control of the city; Teotihuacan was a multi-ethnic city that reached its peak between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD. So various indigenous cultures had control of the city and any of them could have built this majestic city

I believe from the latest scholarship we have it was populated by a very diverse group of people as it seemed to have also been both a pilgrimage and trade site. The main language seems to have been a proto Nahua language, a predecessor of the language spoken by the Toltecs centuries later and the Mexica a millennium later.
