Manager here: bruv, they won’t let me fire people. It takes a lot. I try.

I have asked this question and apparently “it’s a very long process” to fire someone. There has to be a paper trail and “nobody has time”. But when a good employee is late one time there’s plenty of time for that write up

Almost nobody truly has the ability to just fire someone. There has to be paper trail, you have to do coaching, etc. etc. and it's GOOD that it's this way. Last thing we need is managers firing whoever whenever they feel like it.

I was a manager. It was because they had to commit fireable offenses as written in the handbook. They first had to get write-ups as well. Some bad employees really walk the line between bad and fireable, but never fully cross it. Plus, at least in that job, they were mostly students so they usually were going to quit soon and move away anyways

My thing is this. No offense to a lot of the managers in the comments, since it isn't all of y'all. But it seems like the managers don't just retain the bad ones, they shield them. Like if they let the bad seeds get noticed, it reflects on them for hiring poorly. I don't know, that's at least what the general moral feels of the people who carry the workload.

WHY DO THEY KEEP BAD MANAGEMENT

I think the problem a lot of the time is by the time it becomes a problem enough to fire them. They realize they haven’t documented anything and then when they start trying to record it’s like suddenly the person’s on best behavior just long enough for them to kind of let it go. I will say that I live in a state that has right to hire right to fire laws which means basically they can let you go for just about anything and not be sued, but even still just for company policy. They have to have a paper trail.

Lowkey I kept bad employees bc if I didn't, the good employees we did have would be short staffed and stressed until we could replace them. sometimes its just better to have the extra set of hands around , even if theyre useless 50% of the time.

Also why is it that the GOOD employees get fired for the smallest reasons but all of a sudden when someone is habitually late everyday now there’s a “process”

Corporate— they won’t let us fire people. Being incompetent isn’t breaking policy, unfortunately.

because in CA, everyone sues for everything. so everything has to be documented to prove it was a justified termination.

For anyone who’s seen The Office and remembers the episode where Dwight goes “3 demerits will get you 1 citation, 5 of those gets you a violation, keep it and it’s a verbal warning, after that a written warning, 2 of those and you’ll receive a disciplinary write up…” - this is actually not far off from the real process in a large corporate setting.

As someome who's been a manager at a lot of different places, it's bc someone is being incompetent. Could be the manager, HR person, district manager, store manager, plant manager, shift supervisor, ect. It's not hard to get people fired at all. It's actually really easy to fire someone. But if someone in the "needs to approve the termination" line isn't competent then it's not gonna happen. Ngl it's most likely the high up management sucking at their job or the lower management not starting the paper trail from the beginning

My whole thing is the attendance policy. What’s the point of having one if it’s not gonna be enforced? There are so many people who call in sick every other week and are never fired.

HR makes it nearly impossible to fire someone. There’s a series of verbal warnings. Then a series of written warnings required. Then you do all that and HR says “ we’re going to give them another chance. Let’s put them on an Improvement Plan”. It’s exhausting!

It’s almost impossible to fire an employee for simply being “incompetent” and HR would never accept that kind of reasoning to fire someone especially if they are hourly. We basically have to find petty attendance reasons to slowly start the process to firing them but like at a place where I work I’d have to do about 7-8 different write ups before they even reach a final warning.
