Deep beneath the surface, oil and natural gas are trapped under enormous geological pressure. During drilling and production operations, that pressure is carefully controlled using drilling fluids, well-control procedures, and specialized safety equipment. A blowout occurs when formation pressure overwhelms these barriers, allowing gas, oil, or drilling fluids to surge to the surface with tremendous force.
