KAUAʻI TRAVEL UPDATE: 9/9/2026 Hurricane Lowell caused significant damage across parts of Kauaʻi, and while the island is already beginning the recovery process, damage assessments are still ongoing. I am working with my in destination contacts to try and receive updates, but it’s been difficult to connect due to power being out. Poʻipū and parts of the South Shore have experienced some of the most significant impacts with storm surge, flooding, large rock and sand debris, and damage to homes and resort properties. Sheraton Kauai Resort and Koa Kea Resort are among the properties with reported damage. Other areas of the island, including Waimea and the North Shore, have also experienced road closures, debris, downed trees and infrastructure damage. This list is not exhaustive, and additional damage may be identified as assessments continue. If you’re traveling in the next few days, I would recommend contacting your travel advisor, or airline and resort before traveling and asking specifically about current operations, access, power and any damage to the property. If your resort is offering flexibility to postpone, I would seriously consider it, particularly for stays in the hardest hit areas. Rerouting to a different less affected Hawaiian island would be a good option. For trips that are two weeks or more away, I would continue monitoring your specific resort, airline and official county updates. I’m also very aware that this is about much more than tourism. Several homes, families and local businesses have experienced extensive damage and loss. My page focuses on Hawaiʻi tourism, so my updates are primarily centered around how these events impact visitors, but I never want that to overshadow what the people who call Kauaʻi home are experiencing. I’m hoping for everyone’s safety and for a strong recovery and rebuilding process in the weeks ahead.
