Friedrich Nietzscheriedrich Nietzsche was born on 15 October 1844 in Röcken, Prussia, into a religious Lutheran family. His father, Carl Ludwig Nietzsche, was a pastor who died when Friedrich was only five years old. Nietzsche was raised mainly by his mother and later attended the prestigious Schulpforta boarding school. He studied classical philology at the universities of Bonn and Leipzig. In 1869, at just 24, he became a professor of classical philology at the University of Basel, Switzerland. During this period, he developed a close intellectual friendship with composer Richard Wagner, although they later became opponents. Nietzsche left his professorship in 1879 because of poor health and spent years traveling through Switzerland, Italy, and France. He wrote many influential works, including Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, and On the Genealogy of Morality. His philosophy questioned traditional morality, religion, and established ideas about truth and human existence. In 1889, Nietzsche suffered a severe mental breakdown in Turin, Italy. He spent his remaining years under the care of his family and died on 25 August 1900, in Weimar, Germany, at the age of 55. His ideas later profoundly influenced philosophy, literature, psychology, and modern culture.
