@20vc_tok: CEO of Perplexity on why ChatGPT will never win in advertising. "When the decision making is more subjective and vibes based, you don't need an objective answer engine" Aravind Srinivas breaks down why massive brands like Booking.com spend $16bn on traditional search. Users want discovery and exploration for subjective purchases, a buying behavior that standard chat interfaces simply fail to capture. #perplexity #chatgpt #ai
But that can change. If Google browser and search can drive it's traffic to AI why can't ChatGpt drive it's user intent behavior also

They will implement that natively in the chat interface. They already stated when sharing purchase links for a product

You like exploration because you know it exist. We will certainly have a situation where older generation (we) would prefer interfaces that offer options whereas our kids would follow the recommendation of an AI agent. We have the same situation with ipad and paperbook. With that being said, brands should aim to be omnipresent.

This is a super interesting take. It makes total sense that search and chat serve completely different needs. Thanks for sharing this perspective on how user intent really shapes the ad landscape.

kind of ironic. I planned a trip using perplexity copilot in 2023. literally all my exploration was done there.

Yes however it’s always a combination > what flight has the roomiest first class from x to y then chat gives an answer and I book on Expedia or Google.

I do believe that MCP apps have the potential to build really nice workflows and kick in when exploration is best done in the UI. Before you say “Who wants to use an app in Claude?” Think about this - they are continuous conversations that start with a goal to find e.g. sights in Japan, then leads to best time to travel, and that’s when at the right moment an app which enables visual discovery kicks in and feeds the conversation context. When it works, it’s magical!
