i think buffalo bill was unintentionally really bad rep for trans women but actually watching/paying attention to the movie and hearing what jonathan demme had to say about it that was clearly not their intention, also the rest of the movie is so fucking good that i’m willing to look past it

I hate when people talk about the NBC show like it’s the wokified gayified version of silence of the lambs, when the entire franchise is full of political commentary, especially about gender, especially the books

Because It wasn’t forced. It wasn’t about commercialising ‘oppressed women™️’ to create noise and attention from actually quite privileged indivuals snapping their fingers online. The feminist theme was mixed in with many other themes so that it was actually realistic. It wasn’t accusatory. Clarice wasn’t vengeful, she wasn’t a snarky power girl, she’s was a working class woman authentically succeeding in a harsh environment where she found it hard to belong. Anthony Hopkins portrayal of Hannibal Lecter was great, he was a man monster but also likeable in a non manipulative way, intelligent and tender towards Clarice. You don’t get this layered approach towards bad men these days as much, even Buffalo Bill was a well fleshed out character with the source of his violence partially rooted in his psychological torment as a transgender person and abuse as a child.

I wrote my dissertation on silence of the lambs. Demme tried but he did miss a few times and there's some interviews he gave with lines in there about feminism that make him sound like Michael Scott/David Brent in The Office. If you Google "Jonathan Demme pulling for women" you'll probs find it. He's trying but honestly it's just a funny read

i’ll never forget the autopsy scene where Clarice manages to offer super valuable insight about who the girl was BY HER NAIL POLISH BECAUSE she was a local to her hometown. like Lecter tries to make her feel insecure with her working class background but it’s her background AND her gender that makes her so fantastic so points for class acknowledgment too.
