People don’t actually think that billionaires are immoral. They are just jealous. If they could be as rich as Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk, they would be so in a flash. People don’t actually think that power and strength is a bad thing. They are just angry that they are too weak and pathetic to be so themselves. This is what Friedrich Nietzsche called ‘ressentiment.’ And he thought that all of our modern values are based upon envy and bitterness. Nietzsche argued that once upon a time, the values of the world were power, nobility, and success. Alexander, marching through Persia to India, was called ‘Great.’ The Romans, bringing Roman civilisation to everyone, were something glorious. Then Christianity inverted these values to say that things like modesty, and poverty, and chastity were suddenly virtues. The warrior was now evil, and the poor were now good. Christianity cut off the top to make the bottom feel better about themselves. Nietzsche argues that this shift is contrary to every natural proportion of life. It is a will to nothingness, where in reality everything in nature has a ‘will to power.’ The result is a kind of guilt and self-destruction, because without external means to satisfy our will to power, we tear ourselves apart. We are resentful at others and ourselves. For Nietzsche, we need to reaffirm life again, take control, and take command of who we are. Live unapologetically and proudly. Do things. Do things in spite of all of the bitter, and resentful voices that are trying to keep you back.
