📍Iraq 🇮🇶 This donkey was presented to us. He has clearly led a long hard life, but there is no history of what happened to him before reaching his current owner. Clearly he sustained a fracture to his left leg at the level of the cannon bone. This has subsequently healed firmly, but at a terrible angle. Donkeys can often recover well after fractures but it requires careful splinting and management which this poor boy did not have. He no longer works and is living out his days as a companion. His current owners did not wish to have him euthanized. Thankfully due to the position of the fracture, he does not develop pressure sores on his skin, but the hoof is growing too long as it does not wear down on the ground. His other 3 hooves are also too long, creating a lever effect and adding strain to his tendons. We explained the need for regular foot trimming for all equines and a local farrier was scheduled for the next day. This at least can be a sustainable improvement to the animals in this herd, and make this sweet boy will be more comfortable. It is so heartbreaking seeing animals like this. Sadder still is knowing he would have a straight leg if he had received proper vet care when first injured. Cases like this are a perfect example of why we do the work we do. To train local vets to better treat animals in need, and provide education to communities, so that their animals can live better lives and be taken for treatment as soon as it is needed. If you wish to support our work helping animals in need you can want to check out our Ukraine fundraisers or head to our shop to grab a last minute Christmas pressie that supports our work: 1) Donations: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/helphorsesinukraine 2) USA donations (tax deductible): https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-worldwide-vets-treat-animals-in-ukraine 3) www.worldwidevets.com/shop #iraq #rescue #animalrescue #animalclinic #volunteerwithanimals #volunteerabroad #animalscience #biologysciences #biologist #volunteer #iraqrescue #iraqanimal
