growing up my father was strict and very distanced . He provided for us but was absent . Took me years to understand that he didn’t know how to be the father I badly needed . He is 75 now and he looks so frail and fragile and I feel so guilty for disliking him in my earlier years .

When you become a parent yourself you realize that your parents did the best they knew how from what they experienced in their own childhood. Then you also see if they wanted to be the cycle breaker they could have. Just as you did

the worst part is being angry about how their parents treated them and being even angrier that they couldn't entirely break the cycle for you

I think one of my biggest blessings in life is that I want to be just like my father, if I become half the man he is I’ll feel great.

My dad was a great man. Him and my mom were together just short of 60 years. I have four older siblings. My parents did all they could to make sure we were all successful. He died nine years ago from cancer. My wife and I have been together for 36 years and we have raised two incredibly successful daughters, but I still aspire to be half the man my dad was and love every minute I have with my 91-year-old Mom.

It’s strange because she actually did change the cycle and now I want to change it again but not because she’s a bad parent, just because she was a single parent and did her best with what she had but I dint want my kids to only have one parent. .

I’m so lucky. I never felt that way about my parents. Hoped I would be half the parents they were. Now they’re gone and I miss them every day
