Watching one stretch to reach fresh leaves is a reminder that this remarkable adaptation opens a part of the forest canopy that many other herbivores cannot access. Giraffes feed mainly on the leaves, flowers, and shoots of trees such as acacias. Their height, combined with a prehensile tongue that can reach up to 45 centimetres, allows them to browse efficiently while avoiding many of the thorns that protect these trees. What looks effortless is the result of millions of years of evolution, where anatomy and environment have shaped one another. Every species carries a story of adaptation.
