The smell of gas is added because it naturally is odorless. You don't mention the year this took place but from the pics I really wonder if there was any smell when the door was open.

Birds are very susceptible to gas and fumes. (Think canary in a coal mine) so I have doubts about the premise of a gas sniffing parrot.
